Tell the world about the terrible war in the language of art
DakhDaughters are ‘daughters’ of the Contemporary Arts Center “Dakh”, a female band whom fans often call witches for the magic they create with their music and performances.
At the beginning of March 2022, DakhDaughters were forced to leave the country and seek refuge in France, in the city Vir. The possibility of creating a theater and music project as soon as possible, in order to resist the consequences through creativity, became obvious. “Dance Macabre” takes us on a journey through what is believed to be several thousand kilometers away. Immersion in war and its destruction, prompts mobilization, unification and fierceness protection of the world.
Dance Macabre is a performance created in France, where the members of Dakh Daughters temporarily live, which premiered in June at the Odéon Theater in Paris.
During the first six months of the full-scale invasion, the DakhDaughters performed in 10 countries and performed 45 plays attended by more than 13,000 viewers.
More than ten countries, the world’s largest and most respected stages hear the story of the events in Ukraine from Dakh Daughters today.
We talked to the girls about freedom, democracy, life, death, and hatred. About the unification of Ukrainians and the world around Ukraine. About how they appreciate the opportunity to talk about Ukraine everywhere now.
How did the full-scale invasion begin for each of them? Where do they find the strength to go on stage again and again and talk about the terrible events in Ukraine?
“At some point on stage, you don’t understand who you are: are you an actor or a human being? You understand that you must read the text, and it hurts you to read it. As a professional, you must pull yourself together to say it, and a lump in your throat and tears sometimes just doesn’t allow you to read it correctly.”
