The city of Irpin is located twenty kilometers from Kyiv. About 200 kilometers separate the city from the border with Belarus and almost 300 from Russia.
The city’s population was 65,000 people before February 24, 2022. Many parks and new apartment buildings. Windows facing the forest. A comfortable new town near the capital.
Russian troops sought to surround the capital, and the battles for Irpin continued until March 28. The city was under occupation for a month. The evacuation of the civilian population took place in extremely difficult conditions due to the destroyed bridge. According to open-source data, 322 civilians died.
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the city has been constantly targeted by missile and air strikes.
After Ukrainian forces pushed the enemy away from Kyiv, residents began to return to Irpin.
About 50% of the buildings in Irpin were destroyed due to Russian shelling. 10,596 buildings were damaged, 1,836 buildings were completely destroyed. Among them are forty high-rise buildings with hundreds of apartments.
Entire families were left without their homes.
“The child asks me every day, mom, when will I finally sleep in my little room, in my bed? And you have to answer honestly, we don’t have a home, daughter.”
The local residents join forces to rebuild their homes. The invincible residents of the “Greenlife on Mechnikova” residential complex collect funds for reconstruction, repair what is possible with their own money, go to work every day passing by their destroyed apartments, and believe in the best.
