On April 12, the Russian forces attacked a water pipeline that supplies water from the Dnipro River in the Kherson region to Mykolaiv. So the city of half a million people was left without a stable water supply. It took the local authorities nearly a month to fix the water supply situation. However, the city, which holds the defense in the south, still doesn’t have a serviceable water supply system to meet domestic needs.
Mykolaiv has had trouble with water since April 12, and from that moment on, people began to bring water from other cities. At first, in small batches of 50-100 carboys, later the quantity reached tons. During this time, volunteers have already transported more than 2 million liters. Four people per shift dispense water during a whole week, 10 tons of water are collected daily.
As of the fall of 2022, when the filming took place, the water in Mykolaiv’s water supply system remained technical. It is collected from the Pivdennyi Buh River, and further water purification and installation of distribution points continue in the city.
Installation of osmotic systems for water purification is also underway in Mykolaiv. In particular, in administrative buildings, schools, kindergartens, and hospitals. It’s required to balance the parameters of the salt levels and the water softness. As for now, the city has already received more than 60 osmotic systems from partners and expects an increase soon.
While the weather was warm, the water was distributed from the cars, but when the frosts began, it became impossible. Therefore, the water distribution points were moved to the heated rooms, so people could get water there.
Today, the citizens can only cope with the volunteers’ support. The film tells about how the whole city needs water, and how the water, which is so important for humans, restores its sources to continue feeding the city residents.
